Film Stills Archive, 1896-1986.

Stills documenting more than 50,000 film titles from American and foreign productions as well as one-half million portraits and candid shots of film personalities including actors, actresses, directors, and producers. Among the special holdings are the D.W. Griffith Collection which consists of stills from Griffith's Biograph and feature productions; the Essanay Collection of stills from films released from 1913 to 1917 and which are lost today; the Ince Collection of 25 rare stills books from the major films of his studio, Inceville; the Douglas Fairbanks and Richard Barthelmess Collections of original linen-back production and scene stills from their feature films; and the George Melies Collection of French short films, 1899-1912. The Archive also has an extensive collection of foreign film stills; stills from Japanese, French, and Russian films predominate. Stills from recent American releases are also available.
